Aleksandar Stević

Literary Historian. English Professor. Translator.

Welcome!

I am a scholar of English and Comparative Literature and a professor at Lingnan University. Although I work primarily on the nineteenth and twentieth-century novel, I maintain a range of research interests: I have published on such diverse topics as the history of the Bildungsroman, the relationship between cosmopolitanism and nationalism in the work of writers like George Eliot and James Joyce, the sociopolitical contexts of Greek tragedy, French realism and the Napoleonic legacy, the sociological critique of Kantian aesthetics, and on the theoretical problems associated with attempts to assign political significance to literary form, among many others. While seemingly eclectic, these varied lines of inquiry are all rooted in a shared preoccupation with the ways in which we conceptualize the relationship between aesthetic objects and the social and intellectual contexts from which they emerged.
